What is Alphabet Embroidery?
It’s simply sewing letters to form words. Sewing machine needles are manufactured with the alphabet on them to enable you to sew letters.
As an example, let’s look at the first letter of the alphabet, A. The needle has a hole in it that is slanted upward so that when you push your fabric under the hand to form an ‘A,’ the needle will pierce through both layers of material to create an ‘A’ shape. This is also called top-stitching or running stitch.
The easiest way to create an ‘ABC’ is to stick the letters in vertical lines. You can then sew horizontally along the line or along the edge of the fabric. To duplicate stitching on curved shapes, just cut out pieces of cardboard with letter shapes on them and glue them to your material.
One other thing about Alphabet Embroidery that is important to remember is that there are usually 2 sides to the letter. The top side should be created in the same manner as the other sides. After all, you don’t want your ‘A’s’ slanting backward.
The following are two easy steps to stitching letters on your machine
1) Determine Your Letters Needs:
Determine how many letters you need to stitch. Then, using a ruler and pen, place dots on your fabric where you need to place each letter. Remember that there are two sides to each letter, so you will have 4 dots per letter. This also means that you will have 8 drops for an ‘ABC.’
2) With the Help Of Pencil Dots:
With a pencil, write out the letters on the dots. Then, using a straightedge and your sewing machine needle, stitch each letter in order from top to bottom.
You will need to test your letters before you sew them onto the fabric, which is incorrect placement. You can do this by placing them where they should be and then sewing over them again from the top. If you find that a letter is not in the correct position, simply adjust it with a fine tip needle and wax pencil eraser by moving it 90’s. So, if it is in place, press with a non-stick bone folder or your finger where you want it to go. If there is a slight indentation, make a tiny Knick with a pin on the back of the fabric to create a better shape.
Alphabet Embroidery Tips:
- Use an embroidery hoop to keep your sewing straight and even. It will give your work a more professional appearance.
- Alphabet Embroidery uses the same needles as regular sewing. Be sure that you always have some on hand because you never know when you’ll need them for this project.
- Use colors that coordinate with the fabric’s color for best results.
- Purchase fabric that is very lightweight for this project so you can see your pencil markings better.
- Embroidery is a fun way to personalize your clothing.
Let’s move forward toward the list of best sewing machines for alphabet embroidery.
